When the holidays roll around, Texas transforms in a way that surprises even the people who live here. Imagine twinkling lights draped across historic downtowns, splashy holiday events mixed with small-town charm, and plenty of space for your family to roam, laugh, and make memories. If you’re looking for the perfect place to take your crew this Christmas, somewhere that feels festive but still relaxed.

Here are some of my favorite spots across the Lone Star State.

Grapevine: The Christmas Capital of Texas

There’s a reason this town gets called the “Christmas Capital of Texas.” Every corner seems to sparkle between November and the New Year. The main street lights up with decorations, themed events keep families busy, and the snow-tubing, a holiday train, and a playground with a train all bring out the kid-in-everyone. Coffee shops, fantastic dining, wine tasting and retail shops line the street.

This is a great place to visit even if it’s not the holiday season!  If you’re looking for even MORE excitement, Grapevine is also home to BASS Pro Shops (get a free picture with Santa), Great Wolf Lodge and The Gaylord Texas Hotel which is a massive high-end hotel with its own little city & riverwalk inside.

They have an annual event called “Ice” where you walk through huge ice sculptures, ice, slides, and Christmas themed movie scenes carved out of ice. Lots of things for the kids to do here, but you will need to purchase tickets and reserve a time ahead of time. Check Groupon for cheaper rates! If you’re dreaming of big holiday energy, this place delivers.

Fredericksburg: Hill Country Charm Turned Holiday

If you need a break from the hustle & bustle, something slower and rich with character, this Hill Country town is a gem. The main square gets dressed up for the season, and the pace slows so you can really soak in hot cocoa, snow-melted memories, and a mix of local boutiques and evergreen trees. With fewer crowds, it’s great for families who want festive without frantic, who want a quieter Christmas where memories feel deep instead of rushed.

While you’re there make sure and check out Hondo’s for lunch or dinner and live music, taste some wine (if you’re into that) since this is the center of Texas wine country, and shop at the unique stores up and down Main Street. Such an amazing place! PS: you’re just minutes from Luchenbach, The Texas White House (LBJ Ranch), and Hye Texas (Garrison Brothers Distillery).

Austin: City Lights & Family Vibes

For those who like their holiday fun served urban-style, Austin blends big city with approachable family fun. There are light shows, winter events, cozy cafés where you can warm up, and parks that turn into holiday havens as the sun sets. Staying somewhere near Central Austin gives you access to both the action and the chill. Grab dinner downtown, walk through light-filled parks, then retreat to a quiet room where the glow fades and your family can relax.

San Antonio Area: Riverwalk Magic & Historic Holiday Feel

This spot feels like a holiday postcard. The river reflects strings of lights, historic buildings glow, and you’ll find both nature, great Mexican food and festivity wrapped into one. It’s perfect when you want your kids to experience that wide-eyed “Wow!” feeling.

Boat rides, lights around every turn, and the possibility of strolling into history while wrapped in holiday spirit. Schedule something early in the evening (before tired takes over) and pick a lodging that keeps travel short. I recommend staying at a hotel along the Riverwalk, just be prepared to pay out the nose for parking!

Smart Holiday Travel Tips for Families in Texas

  • Book early—Holiday stays fill up faster than you’d think, especially near top destinations.

  • Mix big and small—Plan one big outing (light show, holiday train) but leave room for rest, pajamas, and casual moments.

  • Pack smart—Even in Texas, nights can get crisp. Layer up so evenings outdoors don’t turn into frozen shivers.

  • Stay near the action—Less driving means more time enjoying together. If you’re staying far out, plan transportation accordingly.

  • Watch the calendar—Some attractions run only certain dates, some showings sell out, and weather may affect outdoor plans.

  • Let the magic happen—Sometimes the best memory isn’t the big show. It’s the surprising little moment: a downtown stroll, hot cocoa under lights, laughter unplanned.

Whether you choose the high-energy lights of Grapevine, the quiet charm of a Hill Country town, the city-buzz of Austin, or the river-lit magic of San Antonio, Texas has holiday experiences that can feel special without being overwhelming.

The goal isn’t just to go somewhere, but to arrive somewhere where your family slows down, connects, and laughs. Pick your spot, get excited, and let this Christmas turn into one your family remembers for years!
