You don't have to leave Texas to get into the Christmas spirit. From charming Hill Country towns and historic downtowns to millions of twinkling lights and Christmas markets, there are plenty of places across the state that go all out during the holiday season.

Whether you're planning a family road trip, a romantic weekend, or a festive getaway with friends, here are eight Texas destinations worth adding to your Christmas travel list.

1. Grapevine

If you're looking for a full Christmas experience, Grapevine is hard to miss. Known as the Christmas Capital of Texas, the city hosts more than 1,400 holiday events and activities over 40 days.

Historic Main Street becomes especially festive with lights, decorations, shops, restaurants, and holiday entertainment. Families can also ride the North Pole Express, while adults can check out the Christmas Wine Train. Other seasonal attractions include the Peace Plaza ice rink, Hometown Christmas, holiday performances at the Palace Theatre, and the enormous ICE! attraction at Gaylord Texan.

2. San Antonio

Christmas in San Antonio combines holiday lights with the city's history, culture, food, and mild winter weather. The River Walk is the centerpiece, with hundreds of thousands of lights illuminating the trees and waterfront during the holiday season.

You can stroll along the River Walk, take a holiday river cruise, enjoy seasonal dining, visit Historic Market Square, or explore some of San Antonio's famous landmarks. The city also hosts events such as the Ford Holiday River Parade, Holidays on Houston Street, and seasonal celebrations at local attractions and theme parks.

3. Fredericksburg

For a cozy Christmas getaway with a little German flair, head to Fredericksburg. The Hill Country town celebrates Weihnachtszeit, its Christmas season, with traditional German-inspired decorations and events throughout the community.

The nightly Christmas Nights of Lights at Marktplatz features a large community Christmas tree and a 26-foot German Christmas Pyramid, accompanied by holiday music and a short presentation about the town's German heritage.

You can also shop along historic Main Street, enjoy local wine and Hill Country cuisine, attend the Light the Night Christmas Parade, or spend the night at a cozy bed and breakfast.

4. Galveston

Want something a little different for Christmas? Head to the coast. Galveston combines Christmas traditions with beaches, historic architecture, and a distinctly coastal atmosphere.

One of the island's biggest holiday attractions is Holiday in the Gardens at Moody Gardens.

In 2026, the event runs from November 21 through January 2 and includes a Festival of Lights, outdoor ice skating, holiday train rides, seasonal entertainment, and ICE LAND, featuring elaborate sculptures carved from two million pounds of ice.

Galveston also hosts holiday events such as Dickens on the Strand, giving visitors another reason to explore the historic downtown during the Christmas season.

5. Fort Worth

For a Texas Christmas with plenty of Western character, Fort Worth is a fun choice. The Stockyards gets into the holiday spirit with Christmas in the Stockyards, where visitors can find activities such as ice skating, Cowboy Santa photos, outdoor games, and seasonal entertainment.

You can spend the day exploring the Stockyards, grab some Texas barbecue, visit the city's museums, and then check out holiday lights and events around town. Fort Worth also has seasonal shopping opportunities, including the Clearfork Holiday Market.

6. Tyler

Tyler makes a great Christmas road-trip destination in East Texas, especially if you enjoy driving around to see holiday lights. One of the area's attractions is Santa Land, a drive-through Christmas park featuring holiday lights and Christmas-themed displays.

Beyond the lights, Tyler offers a quieter small-city getaway with restaurants, shopping, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the holiday season without the crowds of a major metropolitan destination.

7. Marshall

For a smaller-town Christmas experience, consider Marshall in East Texas. The city offers historic charm, locally owned businesses, restaurants, and seasonal events that make it a nice option for a slower-paced holiday trip.

Marshall is also known for its connection to the history of boogie-woogie music and has a variety of attractions and experiences to explore throughout the year.

If you're planning a longer East Texas road trip, Marshall can easily be combined with other nearby towns and attractions.

8. Waco

Waco is another fun option if you're looking for a Christmas getaway that mixes shopping, food, attractions, and holiday events. The city has plenty to explore around downtown and the surrounding areas, making it easy to build a full weekend itinerary.

Spend some time shopping for Christmas gifts, grab a seasonal meal or coffee, explore local attractions, and look for holiday markets and light displays happening during your visit. Waco's central location also makes it a convenient stop for a Texas road trip between larger cities.

Texas may not be the first place that comes to mind when you picture a traditional snowy Christmas, but that's part of what makes the holiday season here so fun. You can watch Christmas lights along the San Antonio River Walk, experience German traditions in Fredericksburg, visit the coast in Galveston, or spend the season surrounded by thousands of holiday events in Grapevine.

So whether you want big-city lights, small-town charm, a Hill Country escape, or a Christmas road trip, there's a Texas destination for you.
