Fall is one of the best times to visit Fredericksburg, Texas. Cooler temperatures, Hill Country scenery, pumpkins, wine, festivals, and Halloween events give you plenty of reasons to plan a weekend getaway. Whether you're looking for a relaxing couples' trip, a family-friendly fall adventure, or simply an excuse to explore the charming streets of downtown Fredericksburg, there's something for just about everyone.

Here are 10 things to add to your Fredericksburg fall bucket list.

1. Wander Along Main Street

Start your visit with a stroll down Fredericksburg's famous Main Street. The downtown area is filled with more than 150 locally owned shops and boutiques, along with galleries, restaurants, cafés, and specialty stores.

Fall is a particularly fun time to browse the shops for seasonal décor, handmade gifts, Texas souvenirs, antiques, and local food products. Give yourself plenty of time to wander instead of rushing from one store to the next.

2. Pick the Perfect Pumpkin

Pumpkin season typically runs from mid-September through October in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County. Local farms, orchards, roadside stands, and shops offer pumpkins and gourds, with some locations providing pick-your-own experiences and other fall activities.

Wildseed Farms is one option, with more than 25 varieties of pumpkins and gourds available during the fall season. Jenschke Orchards is another popular stop, offering pumpkin picking along with activities such as wagon rides and a corn maze.

3. Spend an Afternoon at Wildseed Farms

Wildseed Farms is worth adding to your itinerary even if you're not specifically looking for pumpkins. The property offers gardens, a nursery, a gift shop, food, wine, and plenty of space to explore.

Its annual Fall Festival brings even more seasonal fun, including pumpkins, autumn decorations, artisan vendors, live music, seasonal food, and family activities.

4. Celebrate Oktoberfest

If you're visiting Fredericksburg in early October, you may be able to catch the city's annual Oktoberfest. The three-day celebration highlights Fredericksburg's German heritage with live music, food, artisan vendors, contests, family activities, and plenty of traditional festival atmosphere. In 2026, Oktoberfest is scheduled for October 2–4 at Marktplatz.

It's a great way to experience one of Fredericksburg's biggest fall traditions while exploring downtown.

5. Hike Enchanted Rock

Cooler fall temperatures make it a great time to get outside at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. The park features 8.4 miles of hiking trails, camping, climbing, wildlife viewing, and the enormous pink granite dome that has become one of the Hill Country's most recognizable landmarks.

The popular Summit Trail is just over a mile and a half round trip and climbs about 425 feet, rewarding hikers with expansive Hill Country views. Reservations are strongly encouraged, particularly when visiting on busy weekends.

6. Go Wine Tasting in the Hill Country

Fredericksburg sits in the heart of Texas Wine Country, making fall a perfect excuse to spend an afternoon visiting wineries and tasting rooms. You can make a full day of it by exploring the vineyards along the surrounding wine trail or simply stop at a tasting room in town.

Pair your wine tasting with a scenic drive, a leisurely lunch, or an overnight stay for an easy fall escape.

7. Make Time for Halloween Events

Fredericksburg doesn't stop at pumpkins when October arrives. The area hosts a variety of Halloween-themed activities, including haunted tours, costume events, Halloween movie nights, trick-or-treating, and family-friendly celebrations.

For example, the Fredericksburg KOA Resort has a Community Halloween Party scheduled for October 10, 2026, featuring costume contests, live music, games, food, and activities for both kids and adults.

8. Shop for Unique Local Finds

Set aside some time for shopping beyond Main Street. Fredericksburg is packed with locally owned businesses selling handmade goods, art, home décor, antiques, specialty foods, and Texas-inspired gifts.

Fall is also a great time to start holiday shopping, especially if you'd rather bring home something made locally than another generic souvenir.

9. Enjoy Live Music and Hill Country Food

After a day of exploring, settle in for a relaxed evening of live music and good food. Fredericksburg's dining scene offers everything from German-inspired dishes and Texas barbecue to casual cafés and fine dining.

Add live music, a glass of Texas wine, and the cooler evening temperatures, and you've got the perfect recipe for a fall night in the Hill Country.

10. Turn It Into a Weekend Getaway

One of the best ways to experience Fredericksburg in the fall is to stay overnight instead of trying to fit everything into one day. Choose a cozy bed and breakfast, cabin, hotel, or vacation rental and give yourself time to slow down.

Spend one day exploring downtown, visiting farms and wineries, and enjoying fall activities. Then use the next morning for a hike, breakfast, or another leisurely walk around town before heading home.

Fredericksburg offers plenty of ways to enjoy the fall season. The combination of small-town charm, Hill Country scenery, German heritage, and seasonal events makes it an easy choice for a weekend getaway.

If you're planning a Texas fall road trip, put Fredericksburg on the list, you may find yourself wanting to stay a little longer than planned!
